Nuidono Shrine Autumn Festival

Last update: April 1, 2009
"Mikoshi" or a festival float travels with praying for abundant harvest of all the crops
Enshrined gods are Otoshikami, Oujin Emperor, Jingu Empress, Ehime, Okohime, Kurehatori and Anatori. According to a legend, Jingu Empress crafted sails of ships in a war against ancient Korean "Shiragi" dynasty. In the shrine, a buddhist bell(with 81 centimeters height, 47 centimeters diameter, 5 centimeters thickness), donated in 1440 by Toshi, high ranked monk of Munakata Shrine, is preserved and is officially enrolled as a Treasure of Craft by Fukuoka Prefecture. On September 13th every year, people make up a line and carry "Omikoshi", praying abundant harvest of all the crops and their own safety. They start from the shrine and travel around areas nearby, after waging sacred deeds in Nuyama river. Because the enshrined gods are all female, the carriers of a float are all unmarried male.
