The first festival was reportedly held in 1712, when "Gion God" was welcomed at a Gion shrine cottage in Namiori shrine site, and on June 19th in lunar calendar three festival floats were devoted to God in every following year.(Cited from "Appendix to Chikuzen Shoku Fudoki".)The festival experienced suspensions during WWⅡ and from 1962 to 1974; however, in 1975, 16 people established "Tsuyazaki Yamakasa Preservation Society", and restarted the festival with one float.
Owing to eagerness and endeavor of "the society", three floats of "Oka Nagare", "Shinmachi Nagare" and "Kata Nagare" were revived in 1979.In recent years, "Hadaka Mairi" is held on Saturday in mid-July, when participants pray security of the festival by gathering at Namiori shrine and visiting Kompira shrine and Miyajidake shrine. And on the following Sunday, "Oiyama" or a finale of the festival starts from Namiori shrine, and finishes at the site near Tsuyazaki police station.
